This home is design for a family of three: Danny, the artist; Patty, who is in a wheelchair; and their teenage son Jack. There is also an accessory dwelling unit on the property for Patty's parents. The form of the home is inspired by the unidentified man-made object shown in the first photo. A primary focus was accessability, followed by sustainability. The kitchen in particular had many features designed with Patty in mind, such as a lowered range and sink, and an expanded work triangle. All other rooms meet or exceed ADA standards. Concerning sustainability, all new exterior construction on the home and the ADU is made of rammed earth. Materials selected for the interior were picked with manufacturing process and chemical content in mind. The colors inside the home are mostly neutral to reflect the arid climate of Tempe, AZ and to compliment the new rammed earth walls.
I'm proud of how this design turned out, even though I was constricted by the accessability and sutainability standards. This project was our longest (chronolgically), which meant I had lots of time to make changes. The design was modified frequently and drastically throughout my process, as I realized that my ideas weren't matching up with the needs of the family.
