Stevenson Youth Center

The Skamania Youth Center was a unique design project in a number of ways. First of all, it was the only group project of the semester, which I personally enjoyed. I like be able to brainstorm and collaborate, because we can build on each other’s thought, and when a group of people likes my ideas, I feel more assured that they are valid. Plus, with more people to share the duties, more time can be devoted to planning and perfecting. Secondly, our task was to convert a livestock barn into an environment suitable for people to use. The multipurpose nature of the space added much to consider, such as health concerns and removability of any features. Lastly, this project was the only one with real clients who could give us feedback. I didn’t personally go to Stevenson, but as a team, we had to keep in mind the needs and desire of all the students who participated in the primary planning activities. It’s a different experience designing a large space for someone who will actually get to critique it. While it added pressure, I ultimately found it more satisfying.
