Twins' Room

This room is designed for a pair of six-year-old twin girls, using The Trip by Ezra Jack Keats as inspiration. The boy in the story has a very active imagination, so I wanted to give the girls a place to be just as creative. Under each of the bunk beds, there is a desk for arts and crafts, with a shared surface in the open area between. At the foot of each bed is an area to curl up and read. The headboard separates the beds from the TV area next to the closet. The cutouts in this wall mimic the windows of the cityscapes in the book, and also provide footholds so the girls can climb up into bed. Some of the cutouts are covered with colorful plexiglass which tints whatever is view through it. The two sides of the room are different in order to accommodate the girls' varying tastes, but they coordinate.
This project was especially fun because I got to create lots of little spaces within one room, and every square inch of the space is filled by something. It was great to be able to get into a child's mindset because they aren't afraid of color or unusual ideas.
